Their reciprocal relationship with the environment provided food, water, clothing, and tools. They understood the natural climate cycles of flooding and drought and built their settlements accordingly. It is important to acknowledge how Indigenous people have lived sustainably in virtually all landscapes on the continent for thousands of years, developing complex land management practices to maintain the rich biodiversity that sustained them. Many preservation and conservation movements imagine nature as a “pure” environment, free from human interference, which diminishes and erases the critical role that Indigenous people played and play in maintaining the health of our ecosystems. This includes all of the plants, animals, and other living things that make up the communities of life in an area. An ecosystem also includes nonliving materials—for example, water, rocks, soil, and sand. A swamp, a prairie, an ocean, and a forest are examples of ecosystems. Animals tend to find their habitats within an ecosystem. For animals, an ecosystem is like a neighborhood, where a habitat is an address or home within that neighborhood. Human activities and development can disturb habitats to the point where animals can no longer meet their basic needs. The survival of humans is inextricably linked to ecosystem health. Our cities need to prioritize whole landscape improvement for the collective benefit of the people, the animals, and plants. Ecological restoration is ‘‘holistic’’ when it seeks ‘‘not only to help impaired ecosystems recover lost complexity, functionality, structure, and ‘health,’ but also to increase their social, economic, and cultural desirability in the eyes of local residents and other stakeholders’’. An alternative framework of stewardship and not ‘ecosystem services’ helps humans focus on the obligations to care for nature, not only the monetary terms which nature can provide. Biodiversity hotspots are regions with exceptional levels of biodiversity that are also severely threatened. Los Angeles County is home to more than 4,000 distinct species of plants and animals, including 52 endangered species — more than any county outside of Hawaii. In LA, urban development has long presented a direct, immediate threat to species and habitats. Performance - The Benefits of Outdoor Learning From preschool through high school, Schoolyard Habitat projects act as living laboratories where students participate in hands-on exploration of the natural world. These projects enrich the teaching and learning of science, math, social studies, and English in numerous ways. In 1999, a consortium of education agencies from 12 states, called the State Education and Environment Roundtable, published a groundbreaking study entitled: Closing the Achievement Gap: Using the Environment as an Integrating Context for Learning. The roundtable studied schools nationwide that are using the environment as the context for interdisciplinary, student-centered, hands-on learning and teaching across all subject areas. The study reports that students in such programs: • Better performance on standardized measures of academic achievement in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies • Reduced discipline and
